Changes Since 2000
Since the 2000 census, the following changes are noted:
- Despite the completion of the Chambord tract, the population of Oak Park increased by only 41 persons. This is reflected in the decrease in the average household size from over 2.8 in 2000 to slightly less than 2.7 in 2010.
- Oak Park is aging. The median age of Oak Park residents increased by more than 5 years, from 36.3 in 2000 to 41.8 in 2010. Senior citizens — those 65 or older — almost doubled from 5% of the population to 9%. In the meantime, children under the age of 18 decreased from 33% to 26% of the population.
- As racial and ethnic minorities in southern California became more affluent, many moved into Oak Park, significantly increasing their proportion of our population from 12% in 2000 to 17% in 2010.
- Owner-occupied housing decreased from 78% of all homes in 2000 to 75% in 2010. Since all apartment housing was completely developed by the 2000 census, this means an increase in single-family homes and townhomes becoming rental properties.
