My Garden Diary

November and December 2009

Copyright © 2009 by David E. Ross

Many years ago, when I first started my Web site, I created an online diary of my gardening activities and observations. However, with work and the commute from Hell, I was often so tired I had to choose between maintaining my garden and maintaining my diary. Sometimes, I did neither. In 1998, I stopped my diary and removed the pages from my Web site.

Now I am retired. I am well-rested and have plenty of time to both garden and maintain a diary. So here it is.

Entries are in reverse order (latest at the top). Daily, I might stoop to pull a weed or use a hose to water some potted plants; however, I don't consider those significant gardening activities. Thus, you will not see daily entries. Also, I might accumulate a few entries before updating this page on the Web.

When plants have well-known common names, their scientific names are given only the first time they appear on this page (entry closest to the bottom). There, the common name is in bold.

Dates refer to other entries in the same year (but perhaps a different page) as the entry in which they appear unless a different year is given.

Date and Weather Observations and Activities
31 December

Partially cloudy, mostly sunny (sometimes hazy), and cool

Temp: 47-62
Humidity: 33%
Wind: 4-12

Rain —
Season: 4.10
Week: 0.05

Finished pruning the climbing '4th of July' rose. Pruning a mature climbing rose often presents a "chicken and egg" problem. You can't really tell which canes to remove until after you have removed some canes.

Raked leaves again. The wind had blown some leaves from The Tree to the front of the house, but they were few compared with the back. In back, I only raked the leaves from the lawn, to prevent them from smothering the grass. I also gathered leaves into mounds on the patio and walkways. I left the leaves in the shrub and flower beds alone; they make an excellent mulch, which will help reduce the need to run the sprinklers next summer.

29 December

Partially cloudy, mostly sunny, and cool

Temp: 48-65
Humidity: 34%
Wind: 0-8

Rain —
Season: 4.05
Days since last: 16

Pruned three roses in front and started to prune the climbing '4th of July'.

Need to rake some more leaves in back, but I didn't do any raking today. Rain is expected tomorrow, so I expect even more leaves to fall. I plan to rake on Thursday (the day of New Year's Eve).

27 December

Cloudy, occasional hazy sun, and cold

Temp: 43-59
Humidity: 44%
Wind: 0-9

Rain —
Season: 4.05
Days since last: 14

It seems that I've done nothing in the garden this past week except rake leaves. Earlier this week, I filled my green bin for the County's composting project. Then my neighbor loaned me his green bin, which I also filled. Now there are leaves mulching my parkway in front and mounded on the patio and walkways in back. Since the trash company did its weekly collection yesterday, I started to fill my green bin again. I raked the back lawn this afternoon. Two hours later, the lawn didn't look as if it had been touched.

Pruned four of the roses in back. The 'Iceberg' and miniature 'Salmon Ovation' are still in bloom, and the climbing 'Dublin Bay' is about to bloom. I left those three alone for now. In front, some roses are also either in bloom or about to bloom. When I'm through pruning the peach tree and grape vines, however, any roses remaining will be pruned whether or not they are blooming.

20 December

Cloudy, occasional hazy sun, and mild

Temp: 57-69
Humidity: 26%
Wind: 1-9

Season: 4.05

Yes, we had 1.57 inches of rain since my last diary entry. So far, we've had 0.77 inch more rain than we had on this date last year. By no means, is the drought over.

We've also had some night frosts. I see some minor damage to the pink clover and Alstroemeria. But many plants continue to bloom.

Stirred the compost pile, adding oak leaves that I previously raked in front (8 Dec). Then I raked the front again, refilling the trash barrel that I had just emptied and then pouring even more leaves into the green bin for the County's composting project. As before, almost all of the leaves were from my oak tree.

Raked the lawn in back. Most of these leaves were from The Tree. After filling the green bin to the top, I mounded the excess on the walkways and patio.

Cut some rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) in front and other herbs in back to season a pork roast that I will barbecue tonight.

Picked some lemons from the dwarf tree to give to the host tomorrow when I play bridge.

8 December

Clear, sunny, and cold

Temp: 33-50
Humidity: 40%
Wind: 0-7

Rain —
Season: 2.48
Week: 0.90

We finally got some real rain yesterday. So far this rainy season, we've had six times more rain than we had by this date last year. However, this does not mean the drought is over. Following the storm, it was so cold that frost still lingered on the roofs in my community until after 9:45am.

Again, I raked, raked, and raked some more, all in front. This time, most of the leaves were from my oak tree. But when I look up, the tree is still green, looking as if it had not lost any leaves at all. I finished mulching the circular bed. Then I filled an empty trash barrel; when the compost pile dries enough to work it, I'll stir these leaves into it. Finally, I filled the green trash bin; these leaves will go to the county's composting project. Meanwhile, The Tree in back has not started to drop its leaves.

3 December

Clear, sunny, and mild

Temp: 45-70
Humidity: 36%
Wind: 0-11

Rain —
Season: 1.58
Days since last: 49

Last week, I modified the squirrel trap (11 Nov), wrapping 1/4-inch wire mesh around the bait area. Since then, I've caught and relocated three squirrels. I used a mix of peanut butter, chopped pecans, raisins, and dried berries for bait; for the last squirrel, I added a guava cut in half. I relocated the squirrels to Paramount Ranch, a unit of the Santa Monica National Recreation Area. It's about seven miles on the other side of the eight-lane Ventura Freeway and filled with hungry coyotes, hawks, owls, and snakes. I don't expect any squirrels to return.

Rake, rake, rake those leaves. I cleaned up the front of the house, raking mostly zelkova and liquidambar leaves. There were also quite a few leaves from my valley white oak, but that tree is still mostly green. I used all the leaves to mulch the east and circular beds in back. Two hours later, I looked out a window. It looked as if a rake had not touched the area!

When I raked some leaves from the pink clover in the front lawn, I saw that I had to trim the edges of the lawn. I also trimmed some coyote bush (Baccharis pilularis) that was growing over the sidewalk on the far side of the driveway, under the rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis).

More than a dozen lemons are ripening on my dwarf tree, along with uncounted small green lemons. In the meantime, I've been picking up guavas as they fall out of their bush.

11 November

Cloudy, some hazy sun, and mild

The CHE weather station is still not reporting.

Rain —
Season: 1.58
Days since last: 27

Saw squirrels sniffing around the guava bush (Feijoa sellowiana) in back. The guavas should be ripe soon, so yesterday I baited and set the cage trap near the bush. Today, I found that some animal had stolen the bait without triggering the trap.

Put up some cuttings of 'Goodwin Creek Grey' lavender (Lavandula lanata × dentata) in anticipation that Cleopatra might chew the remaining thrift (Armeria meritima) in the circular bed in back to stumps.

Also put up cuttings of the all-green (i.e., not variegated) pothos (Epipremnum pinnatum) from the greenhouse window. This plant has not been doing well. Since I only see variegated pothos at local nurseries, my only chance to have the all-green variety is through cuttings.

Raked leaves in front, mostly zelkova (Z. serrata) with some liquidambar (L. styraciflua) and valley white oak (Quercus lobata). I added the leaves — along with grass clippings from having the back lawn mowed (31 Oct) — to my compost pile. The next batch of leaves will be spread over the east bed in back, where the leaf mulch has become sparse.

Trimmed the edge of the rose bed facing the circular bed and along the small circular patio. Also trimmed the east bed along that same patio. Not only was the pink clover (Persicaria capitata) beginning to grow out over the walkway and patio, but also the Penstemon extended well more than a foot over the patio.

With a possibility of rain tomorrow, I cleaned mud from the catch box at bottom of the downhill V-ditch on My Hill. I definitely don't want the catch box or its drain line getting plugged.

5 November

Clear, sunny, and mild

The CHE weather station stopped reporting today.

Rain —
Season: 1.58
Days since last: 21

Planted more wax-leaf begonias along the front walkway. I'm almost done with this project.

Did some more weeding in the parkway (19 Oct).

Weather data are from the Cheeseboro (CHE) weather station, a little less than 1.2 miles ENE of my house.

The high temperature (°F) is daytime for the indicated date; the low temperature (°F) is for the night ending on that date.

The relative humidity is at noon. (In my garden, it is likely higher than reported, a result of regular irrigation.)

Wind speeds (mph) are average (not peak) low and high, midnight to midnight (subject to later correction for diary entries posted before the end of the day).

Rain is in inches. Rain amounts are omitted after 60 consecutive days elapse without any measurable amount.
Season is the cumulative amount of rainfall since the start of the current rainy season, which began on 13 Oct 2009 with the first measurable rain in 129 days, until noon on the indicated date.
Week is the cumulative amount of rainfall from noon seven days ago until noon of the indicated date. If no rain fell in that period, Days since last is reported.

Characterization of the weather (e.g., Clear, sunny, and warm) is purely subjective; for example, "warm" might occur with higher temperatures than "hot" if the former occurs with lower humidity and more breezes than the latter. Also, a day that would normally be characterized as "mild" might instead be "warm" if the immediately previous days were quite cold.

The signature line I use when writing messages about my garden includes the following:
